“We are honored that two UNM Cancer Center staff members received the 16th Annual People’s Caring Awards,” said Dr. Cheryl Willman, director and CEO of the UNM Cancer Center. “At the UNM Cancer Center we strive to make positive difference in patients’ lives and improve cancer diagnosis and treatment for all New Mexicans affected by the disease.”

and loving heart.” Pier was noted for going above and beyond the call of duty for his patient’s family members and helping them raise money for medicine and cancer care.
Jan de la Garza, clinical nurse specialist at the UNM Cancer Center, received the People’s Caring Award in the “Nurse” category. The individual that nominated de la Garza described her as “extremely caring and considerate.” De la Garza was noted for her sense of humor and was described as more than a healthcare worker, but “a cherished friend.”
The People’s Caring Awards recognize and honor health care professionals, individuals and volunteers who cancer patients and survivors feel have made a substantial impact in their lives. Thirty-nine individuals were nominated by cancer patients and survivors but only six of those were selected as the recipients of the People’s Caring Awards in the categories of physician, nurse, other healthcare professional, individual, volunteer and a special trailblazer award.
The UNM Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of the State of New Mexico, and one of only 64 National Cancer Institute designated cancer centers in the nation. It is home to 85 board-certified oncology physicians representing every cancer specialty and more than 120 research scientists hailing from such prestigious institutions as M.D. Anderson, Johns Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic.
