State’s Leading Health Organizations Join Forces to Bring Culturally, Language Appropriate Cancer Information to New Mexico’s Rural Population
The University of New Mexico Cancer Center, together with the Grant, Catron, Hidalgo, and Luna County Community Health Councils, is establishing several UNM Cancer Center Resource Libraries to distribute culturally appropriate and/or language appropriate materials to rural and medically underserved populations in New Mexico. The libraries will include a variety of written and audio materials on cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

The American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) has proclaimed the month of May as National Cancer Research Month as declared by the United States Congress. The University of New Mexico Cancer Center, the State of New Mexico’s Official Cancer Center based on the UNM campus in Albuquerque, has been recognized by the National Institute of Health (NIH), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences as a national leader in cancer research, diagnosis, and treatment.

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) recently awarded Dr. Karen D. Cowden Dahl, UNM research assistance professor in the College of Pharmacy and member of the UNM Cancer Center, with a 2010 Minority-Serving Institution Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research Award. Dr. Cowden Dahl was one of only twenty-five physicians nation-wide to receive the 2010 Minority-Serving Institution Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research Award at AACR’s 101st Annual Meeting which was held in Washington D.C. on April 17-21.
