Personal Statement

Dr. Soares is Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology, at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is the section leader for the hepato-pancreato-biliary and neuroendocrine tumors clinical program at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. She received her medical doctor degree in 2002 from the Fundacao Universitaria Do ABC (FMABC) in Brazil. She the completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida. Dr. Soares then moved to UCLA in 2010 for her fellowship training in Hematology and Oncology and PhD in Molecular Biology. Prior to joining UNM, she was an assistant professor at Moffitt Cancer Center in Florida. Dr. Soares is interested in developing new therapeutics in gastrointestinal malignancies and NETs through clinical trials and translational research. She has published in journals such as Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, JAMA, BMJ and JCO. In 2014, she received a Seed Grant award from the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with subspecialty in Medicine Oncology. Additionally, Dr. Soares is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Association of Cancer Research (AACR), The North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (NANETS and recently joined the Academic GI Cancer Consortium (AGICC). She is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
