In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Governor Susana Martinez will lead and moderate a discussion by a panel of New Mexico’s experts in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment at the University of New Mexico Cancer Center on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 2:00 PM. The panel will feature Cheryl Willman, MD, Director and CEO of the UNM Cancer Center, and four other UNM Cancer Center physicians, surgeons, and health professionals who serve as New Mexico’s breast cancer experts. The panel will present the latest updates in breast cancer research, screening, diagnosis, clinical care, and prevention.
Joining Governor Martinez and Dr. Willman on the panel will be Melanie Royce, MD, PhD, Director of the UNM Cancer Center’s Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Program and an international expert in breast cancer treatment; Anna Voltura, MD, a native New Mexican and New Mexico’s only fellowship-trained breast cancer surgeon (trained in the pre-eminent Johns Hopkins Breast Cancer Fellowship program); Christopher Demas, MD, the new Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery in the UNM Department of Surgery and an expert in breast reconstruction and plastic surgery; and Lori Ballinger, MS, New Mexico’s only licensed and certified genetic counselor who leads the UNM Cancer Center’s Cancer Genetics Clinic and counseling services.
Breast cancer is second only to skin cancer as the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. The American Cancer Society estimates that 1,360 women in New Mexico alone will be diagnosed with the disease and 240 will die from it. In its earliest and most treatable stages, breast cancer presents no symptoms, so regular screening via mammograms is crucial to catching the disease early.
