New Mexicans are fortunate to have a wide network of community organizations that provide invaluable resources to cancer patients. The UNM Cancer Center works very closely with many of these organizations, and we encourage you to take advantage of their services. However, please note that these are outside organizations and are not affiliated with the UNM Cancer Center.

Cancer Support Now is a member-based organization created by cancer survivors to build and sustain an active community of people whose lives have been affected by a cancer diagnosis. The group provides opportunities for those facing cancer to give and receive support. Cancer Support Now emphasizes peer-facilitated support groups, one-to-one support, activities that strengthen the Cancer Support Now community and education and information to empower people affected by cancer to make prudent decisions.

Casa Esperanza is an affordable “home away from home” serving out-of-town cancer patients and their family members. Casa Esperanza provides simple, home-like amenities that patients and families may find lacking in commercial facilities. Facilities include four central kitchens and a spacious community/dining room to encourage therapeutic interaction and sharing among families. Residents benefit from a free Clinical Counseling Program and a Patient Navigation/Survivor Services Program, designed to help cancer patients, survivors and their families access needed health, financial and social services.

Holland’s Rose is a nonprofit organization founded on the values and principles of a Christ-centered community. It offers a fully equipped home for families staying in Albuquerque for medical reasons, particularly cancer. The Breast and Cervical Cancer Program offers free pap tests and mammograms to eligible women who are underserved and ages 30 or older. In this and other ways, the program seeks to improve access to high-quality breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services for underserved women in New Mexico. The program also works to increase public awareness through education about prevention, disease processes and the importance of regular screening exams for early detection.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, and the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. The Central New Mexico Affiliate covers all of Bernalillo, Los Alamos, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Torrance and Valencia counties. Up to 75 percent of the Affiliate’s net income goes toward funding grants to local hospitals and community organizations that provide breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for medically underserved women.

Women’s Health Equity provides women with free preventive health services such as mammograms, cardiovascular screenings and smoking cessation classes. Trilingual program staff delivers culturally appropriate education about breast health, brain fitness, heart health, nutrition and tobacco cessation. Health Equity outreach workers also provide women with help navigating the healthcare system, emotional support and regular, personal reminders to get annual breast screenings. ENCOREplus is a resource for annual breast cancer screening. ENCOREplus representatives help women access the medical and social service systems to provide both emotional and financial support for screening and treatment services.
