Research Focus (interests and expertise)
Hematopathology with focus on acute leukemia, plasma cell dyscrasias
I decided to do research at UNM Cancer Center because of their pioneering work in the area of molecular pathogenesis of acute leukemia. UNMCC has provided molecular testing nationwide for children entered on Children Oncology Group (COG) Trials. We have also been the central tissue banking repository for samples from these children and from adults with acute myeloid leukemias on Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) Trials. Why this focus?
My research has been based on the type of patients I have been working with in clinical practice. I was previously on faculty at University of Arkansas, which is one of the primary centers in the United States for the treatment of multiple myeloma (plasma cell dyscrasias). I have been involved with SWOG and COG at the University of New Mexico as we have been the repository site for acute leukemias and previously did the molecular studies for COG.
