Research focus (interests and expertise)
Melanoma, DNA repair capacity and cancer disparities in New Mexico.
I chose to do research at UNM because of (1) the opportunity to make a difference among the varied population groups, including the underserved rural populations, (2) the excellent (world class) basic science that is here for me to collaborate with, (3) the clear potential for a strong epidemiology and biostatistics group to develop, (4) the energy of the cancer center, and (5) the beauty of New Mexico and the lifestyle. I chose this focus due to the pain and suffering I have seen from lethal melanoma. DNA repair capacity seems like it could possibly be amenable to intervention, and cancer disparities among the ethnic groups in NM are definitely amenable to intervention.
