Dedication Ceremonies for the new UNM Cancer Treatment and Clinical Research Center to Feature Renowned Musicians, Artists, and the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra

After a decade of planning and construction, the University of New Mexico will dedicate its new UNM Cancer Treatment and Clinical Research Facility in a special series of programs and events entitled “Healing through Arts and Medicine” over the weekend of June 11-12, 2010.

As New Mexico’s Official Cancer Center and one of the nation’s 65 premier National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Centers, the UNM Cancer Center provides fully integrated, state-of-the-art, comprehensive cancer diagnosis and treatment in its new $90 million, five-story, 206,000-sq.-ft. facility.

Designed by Rohde May Keller McNamara Architecture and VOA Associates and constructed by Flintco West, Inc., Bradbury Stamm, U.S. Electric Corporation, Yearout Mechanical, and many New Mexico subcontractors, the new UNM Center is a healing space with a modern esthetic that incorporates the traditions, cultures, and art reflective of New Mexico’s multi-cultural communities.

“Our new facility is a welcoming and gracious healing environment where we not only provide state-of-the-art cancer medicine, but also holistic, supportive care to our patients and their families,” says Dr. Cheryl Willman, director and CEO of the UNM Cancer Center. “We are honored and privileged to present this new facility as a gift to the people of New Mexico, who have given us so much support to create our programs and facilities, and we are committed to providing the very best cancer care to them in return – right here in our home state.”

UNM Cancer Center Weekend – 1st of 2 adds

Reflecting New Mexico’s strong artistic heritage, the first event of “Healing through Arts and Medicine” is a special dedication ceremony and musical performance at UNM’s Popejoy Hall on Friday, June 11, at 6 p.m. Tickets for the event at $30 are available at www.unmtickets.com or by calling (505) 925-5858.

Mistress of Ceremonies will be internationally-famed opera singer Marilyn Horne, herself a recent pancreatic cancer survivor. Maestro Guillermo Figueroa and the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, and famed opera singers Susan Graham and Matthew Worth, who along with Horne have donated their performances to the UNM Cancer Center for the occasion, will perform “Healing Ceremony,” a special musical composition of hope and healing composed by Marc Neikrug, Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.

The evening will also feature Albuquerque slam poet Danny Solis, the state and UNM leaders and donors who made construction of the facility a reality and the many New Mexico artists who have donated works to the Center, including Dan Namingha, Rebecca and Gene Tobey, Irby Brown, B.C. Nowlin, Arturo Chavez, John Geldersma, Leshek Zavistovski, and Star York.

“This is a great time for the UNM Cancer Center and the entire UNM Health Sciences Center,” says Dr. Paul Roth, UNM executive vice president for Health Sciences. ”The dedication events culminate years of hard work and support from the governor’s office, the legislature and the UNM administration to build and staff this state-of-the-art facility that will serve all New Mexicans.”

On Saturday, June 12, at 10 a.m., a brief dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting will be held at the new facility at 1201 Camino de Salud NE. Following the ceremony, the facility will then be open for tours by the public from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Net proceeds from the dedication events will be shared by the UNM Cancer Center and the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Lead sponsors of the weekend events include Fidelity Investments, Elekta, VOA Associates, Fireproofing Products, Mara and Charles Robinson, Ron Rule and Eleanor Brenner. In-kind support has been provided by Rick Johnson & Co, Clear Channel Outdoor and Advanced Presentation Systems.

To ensure that all New Mexicans have access to world-class cancer treatment and benefit from advances in cancer research, the mission of the University of New Mexico Cancer Center is to provide outstanding cancer treatment, conduct world-class research to discover the causes and cures for cancer, train the next generation of cancer healthcare professionals, and overcome New Mexico’s significant cancer health disparities through community-based outreach programs.
