New Safer Radiation Treatment Option for Brain Cancer

By msequeira

The medical physics team at the UNM Cancer Center has expanded their treatment options including a new radiation therapy option that actually is safer for the brain than usual radiation treatments.

The procedure kills the new tumor and also any new tumors taking root in the brain that are too small to see on a scan. The UNM Cancer medical physics team calculated the best possible treatment beams to converge on the new tumor and to go through the whole brain without ever passing through either hippocampi - an area of the brain needed for forming memories.
