Repurposing Drugs to Force Cancer Cell Death

By msequeira

Alexandre Chigaev, PhD, and his team recently published a paper in which they describe how they forced leukemia cells into programmed cell death, a process called apoptosis. They used drugs that the United States Food and Drug Administration has already approved. Using already-approved drugs shortens the time and reduces the money needed to make the drugs available to people who can use them.

Dr. Chigaev is a Research Associate Professor with the UNM Department of Pathology and at the UNM Center for Molecular Discovery. He is an Associate Member of the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center in the Cancer Therapeutics Research Group.

Dr. Chigaev explains the work in an interview with Mike Jaxson, KSVP-AM:

Read the articles in Albuquerque Business First and the Albuquerque Journal, and read the press release. Watch the video in which Dr. Chigaev talks to Crystal Gutierrez, "KRQE This Morning." Also listen to the KUNM-FM radio interview with Marisa DeMarco.
