Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Program

Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Program

The thyroid and parathyroid glands are located in the middle portion of the neck and both produce and control the levels of important hormones and electrolytes in the body. People with surgical disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid glands have a vast range of symptoms (dysphonia, neck mass, fatigue, kidney stones, osteoporosis, dysphagia). Each needs personalized attention.

Our team uses a multidisciplinary approach. This means that our surgeons, endocrinologist and other team members meet frequently to review each person’s treatment plan and to make adjustments when needed. Our multidisciplinary approach enables you to get the best balance of treatments and to get them in the order that’s best for you.

Treatment for thyroid and parathyroid diseases can often require removal of a tumor. Whether your tumor is benign or cancerous, our team can offer you a variety of surgical options. And, we can help you manage your symptoms and restore your balance of thyroid hormone and calcium before, during and after your surgery.

Why is my appointment at the UNM Cancer Center? Does that mean I have cancer?

Not necessarily. Many thyroid conditions and most parathyroid conditions are benign. Your doctor will give you your diagnosis, will explain what it means, and will explain your choices for treatment. We see people at the UNM Cancer Center because our clinic rooms are located there.

Calcium controls important bodily functions; for example, calcium-containing compounds are important for bone health, energy, and mood.

Our  surgeons are the only fellowship-trained head and neck surgeons in New Mexico and specialize in removing cancerous and benign tumors from the thyroid and parathyroid glands. They use advanced surgical techniques to remove tumors from the delicate tissues of your throat, preserving your ability to swallow and helping you to recover quickly.
